can we talk about how this fucking pbs show aimed at little kids easily talked about how anxiety is stressful but normal
Ok no but can we talk about this entire episode?
It was called April 9th, and it was actually a response to the 9/11 attacks. It didn’t talk about the attacks themselves, but rather focused on teaching kids to deal with the all of the emotions that they might be feeling as a result. They set up a situation that might evoke similar emotions in children: a massive fire at the school.
Arthur’s dad was in the fire, so (as you can see above), Arthur is constantly worried about his dad’s safety.
Sue Ellen is grieving because her journal, which contained a huge amount of precious memories, was destroyed in the fire. Muffy is confused why she can’t just cheer Sue Ellen up by giving her a new journal.
Buster wasn’t at school that day, and feels confused and guilty that he isn’t sad about the fire like the other kids. He then befriends the school janitor, who has to retire due to an injury that, at his age, is pretty serious.
Binky actually saw the flames, and is constantly traumatized by the event. He doesn’t tell anyone because he feels like he would lose his tough-guy reputation if he admitted that he was scared.
The episode teaches kids that all of these emotions are perfectly normal and natural, that there’s not one right way to feel, and that even if it takes a while, things are going to be okay.
The thing that makes this show so great, in my opinion, is that it knows that kids are intellegent and strong enough to deal with these things if you present them in the right way. It doesn’t hide them, it doesn’t sugar coat them, it just presents them in a way that children can understand and shows them how to deal with them.
Have we ever discussed the fact that 2001 – 2012 Disney channel’s shows all had strong female leads, with the exception of Zack and Cody but they had a black man in charge, a smart poor white blonde girl and a dumb rich Asian so still beautifully diverse.
Disney was 100% female empowerment and showed diversity. Who did they employ to create the shit they have today?
Of the shows with girls as leads, two of them were POC and their heritage was actively acknowledged throughout the show. We have a Wizards of Waverly Place episode featuring a quincenera and we have That’s So Raven, which actually did a lot to talk about body image and addressed the issue of antiblack racism.
Not to mention Zack and Cody had a working single mother (a divorcee at that!!) who was respected, strong, and amazing. Also a PoC bellhop who was a crucial role and in nearly every episode, and whose heritage was always known and respected.
That’s So Raven had a lovely and diverse cast of friends/family, tackled topics that every teenager faces, like stress from school and work, body positivity and racism that runs in our country, all while still having banter that was classic in Disney.
This also doesn’t even brush on the animated series that Disney had at this time, like Lilo and Stitch, The Proud Family, Kim Possible, and American Dragon Jake Long, which all had either strong female leads, PoC, or a mix of both.
DM: So the drink you got is very exotic, it is a bright red color and has a small fruit in it that’s also red. The fruit has a stem of green on the top of it still and the whole drink smells very alcoholic.
Barbarian(ooc): ….So it’s a strawberry?
DM: What?
Barbarian(ooc): you just described a strawberry.
DM: …..Yeah your right I did. Okay it’s a strawberry.

Listen I’m still pissed that Smash which started as a fun party brawling game got co-opted by a bunch of dick bag “git gud” assholes who literally took it and tried to turn it into every other fighting game out there.
I just wanna point out that all the “No items, stock only, no stage effects” crew all are complete trash at the game. They’re great at FIGHTING GAMES, but complete Garbage at Smash Bros. Because instead of trying to learn the game, learn to play around the items, learn which stages do what, they just turn it all off (when you first start the game all the items and stage effects are on and you can’t turn them off in any of the modes except multiplayer melee).
And then if you do wanna play with items they try to shame you and claim that you’re “ruining the game” or “cheating” because “you can’t win without using items.” Guess what asswipe the intention is to play with the items that’s why they’re their in the first place for free with the base game.
It’s not my fault you had to dumb down the game to succeed cause you don’t know how to use the fire flower or metal bunny ears correctly.
