A very brown cat

(New to DMing, new campaign, party is a dragonborn sorcerer, tiefling cleric, and a half-orc barbarian. Sorcerer has been off snooping around to find out information, and along the way a cat started following her. The other two are waiting back at the tavern)

Me, the DM: After waiting for an hour or so, your new dragonborn friend walks in the front door carrying the brownest cat you have ever seen.

Barbarian, ooc: Can I roll to see if I’ve ever seen a browner cat?

DM: sure

Barbarian, ooc: That’s a six

DM: It is the brownest cat you have ever seen.

Surely, you wouldn’t try that again…!

I was playing a Rogue Thief, who found themselves on a narrow ledge between a Mind Flayer and a giant-fire breathing centipede.

Me: Can I toss out my thief tools as a bonus action to try and distract the Mind Flayer?

DM: Sure.

Me: [Rolls a 7] Nope…

DM: Your thief tools fly off and clatter against the wall of the cavern–you’re lucky they didn’t fall into the abyss.

The Mind Flayer tried to grab me, which I managed to avoid.

Me: I do it again!  With my dagger! [Rolls significantly higher]

Mind Flayer: Trying to distract me?  What a stupid tactic!  Surely you wouldn’t try that again–WOW, WHAT WAS THAT?
